Lyrics to ‘A Song for Dying’

I co-wrote this song with artist Casino Perosi. The perspective dances between the point of view of someone dying and someone who loves them. It was cathartic for me to transform some of my thoughts and experiences with death into art. I hope you find it meaningful, too. And if you want to hear the full song performed live by Casino, come to the Catbird hotel on 11/18. I hope to see you there.

A Song for Dying (Letting go)

Letting go is as easy as listening

Letting go is the hardest thing

There’s a word and a rhythm that we all must sing

Letting go is as easy as listening

Your hand in mine

It’s only a matter of time

Savor you like you’re already gone

And we sway with the song

I hold you, you hold me

We’ve got eternity in this breath (heavy breathing)

There is a labor to death

It takes work to be effortless

Letting go is as easy as listening

Letting go is the hardest thing

There’s a word and a rhythm that we all must sing

Letting go is as easy as listening

Feels like the ending but this is just a chrysalis

Ill hold this close to me when in mourning

Once you realize that you can persist

With your wings spread wide

Beat a path to your afterlife

Ill lay a kiss on your body

Lay your husk in the ground – you don’t need it now

This Dream is the realest thing to me

That skin may never have even been

Letting go is as easy as listening

Letting go is the song we sing

Letting go is as easy as listening

Im drawn to keep hanging on

But my only move is letting go
